IN CONVERSATION WITH THE DEVINE
I chose to share with you a few poems written by mystical poets in conversation with the Devine.
I hope reading them will inspire you to remember, to “remember” that we humans are the only beings that can reflect on our Spiritual Nature and guide our actions towards our Invisible and Infinite Ultimate Meaning of Life.
As Daniel Ladinsky writes, these mystical poems have the ability to help us know our own sacredness, and the skill to awaken us to the wonder – and thus gratitude – of the common.
“The heart suffers, when it cannot see and touch beauty,
but beauty is not shy, it is synonymous with existence”
He continues… I hope a few of these poems will reach in deep enough to cure what separates us from each other, and from the beautiful. I hope you fall into this wine barrel (the poems) and crawl out legally drunk, and get arrested for doing something that makes God proud of you, like being too happy.
RUMI (1207-1273) Love is the essence of Rumi, love became his very being, love is the impetus of all his poetry.
RELATIONSHIP BOOSTER
Here is a relationship booster
That is guaranteed to work:
Every time your spouse or lover says something stupid
make your eyes light up as if you
just heard something
brilliant!
SPIRITUAL HEALTH
A good gauge of spiritual health is to write down
the three things you most want.
If they in any way differ,
You are in trouble.
HAFIZ (c.1320-1389) is the most beloved poet of Persians and is considered to be one of history’s greatest lyrical geniuses. He is rightfully called “The Tongue of the Invisible” for through his works he continues to sing beautiful and wild love songs to this world from God.
WITH THAT MOON LANGUAGE
Admit something
Everyone you see, you say to them, “Love me”
Of course you do not do this out loud, otherwise
Someone would call the cops.
Still, though, think about this, this great pull in us to connect.
Why not become the one who lives with a
full moon in each eye that is
always saying,
with that sweet Moon language,
what every other eye in
this world is
dying
To hear?
IF YOU DON’T STOP THAT
I used to live in
A cramped house with confusion
And pain.
But then I met the Friend (the Divine)
And started getting drunk
And singing all
Night.
Confusion and pain
Started acting nasty,
Making threats,
With talks like this:
“If you don’t stop that,
All that fun,
We’re
Leaving”
KABIR (c.1440-1518) was born in Varanasi, in North India and was a great religious reformer in his time, achieving a remarkable synthesis of Hindu, Muslim and even Christian belief.
THE FISH IN THE WATER
The fish in the water that is thirsty needs
serious professional
counselling.
The glorious role of the mystical poets is to help us accept the Spirit more as It Is and ever less than our prejudices and fears want It to be.
May Kabir’s poems help reduce the income of psychiatrists and maybe even undermine a military budget or two. Why not dream big?
I JUST LAUGH
If I told you the truth about God,
you might think I was an
idiot.
If I lied to you about the Beautiful One
you might parade me through the streets shouting
“This guy is a genius!”
This world has its pants on backwards.
Most carry their values and knowledge in a jug
That has a big hole in it.
Thus having a clear grasp of the situation
if I am asked anything these days
I just laugh!
I HAD TO SEEK THE PHYSICIAN
I had to seek the Physician
because of the pain this world
caused
me.
I could not believe what happened when I got here,
I found My
Teacher.
Before I left, he said,
“Up for a little homework, yet?”
“Okay” I replied.
“Well then, try thanking all the people
who have caused
You pain.
They helped you
come to me”
TUKARAM (c.1608-1649) was born in the small village of Dehu in Maharashtra, India. His poems are called abhangs, which are poetic songs of a teaching and devotional nature.
FIRST HE LOOKED CONFUSED
I could not lie anymore so I started to call my dog “God”
First he looked
confused,
then he started smiling, then he even
danced.
I kept at it: now he doesn’t even bite.
I am wondering if this
might work on
people?
